Mount Tom Route & Conditions

Route
Mount Tom's standard hiking options include Avalon Trail > A-Z Trail > Mount Tom Spur at 5.8 miles with 2,150 feet of gain and Willey Range Traverse - see Mount Field description, includes Tom spur at 10 miles with 3,400 feet of gain. A typical completion time is 3–4 hours - out-and-back to Tom alone.
Terrain and exposure
This is a moderate Willey Range hike. Expect moderate grade through hardwoods then fir; relatively smooth footing with some rocky sections, never extremely steep. There are no major scrambling sections; expect straightforward hiking, occasionally steep but no scrambles. Upper-mountain terrain includes mixed forest of birch and beech low; transitioning to thick spruce-fir near summit; summit area flat and mossy with evergreens and partial, a few steps beyond summit spur end leads to outlook ledge with decent views; true summit wooded. Weather and exposure are defining planning concerns here: low, heavily wooded; minimal weather impact aside from typical rain/snow.
Weather window
The best normal hiking window is summer and fall, roughly accessible and moderate; winter doable with snowshoes/microspikes. Download offline maps and do not rely on cell service; leave a plan with someone.
Water, signal, and bailout
Water is available: crossing of Crawford Brook on Avalon Trail; small streams along A-Z Trail. Cell reception is spotty, likely none in notch or on summit; possibly slight signal at outlook. Bailout options include Easy retreat to Crawford Notch via A-Z or Avalon Trails and Amc Highland Center is nearby for assistance. Nearby live water context is available from Ammonoosuc River at Bretton Woods and Zealand River.
Trailhead and access
The most common trailhead is Crawford Notch / Highland Center (Amc), with room for about 50 vehicles. Park at Crawford Depot or Highland Center lot; plenty of space typically. Other linked starts include Ethan Pond / Willey Range Trailhead and Avalon Trail Trailhead (Crawford Notch).
Connected route context
Major linked trails include A-Z Trail, Mount Tom Spur, and Avalon Trail. Nearby 4,000-footer connections include Mount Field and Mount Willey.
