Water & Crossing Context

Multi-source water data near routes, trailheads, and drainages associated with this peak. These readings and support layers provide runoff and crossing context, not a safe/unsafe crossing decision.

Mount Field Route & Conditions

Route
Mount Field's standard hiking options include Willey Range Traverse - Avalon Trail > Willey Range Trail at 10 miles with 3,400 feet of gain and Avalon Trail - direct out-and-back via Mount Avalon spur at 6.2 miles with 3,050 feet of gain. A typical completion time is 5–7 hours - loop including Tom and Willey.
Terrain and exposure
This is a difficult Willey Range hike. Expect steep in sections, Avalon Trail has short, very steep pitch to Avalon spur.; typical rooty and rocky footing. Scrambling is minor, with short steep scramble up Mount Avalon spur if visited; none required for Field itself. Upper-mountain terrain includes northern hardwoods at low elevations; transitions to boreal spruce-fir near 3,000′; summit area densely forested with balsam fir and spruce and partial, limited view near summit; better outlook from nearby Mt. Avalon. Weather and exposure are defining planning concerns here: low, route largely protected in forest; summit trees break wind.
Weather window
The best normal hiking window is summer and fall, roughly moderate winter hike too; Crawford Notch access year-round. Download offline maps and do not rely on cell service; leave a plan with someone.
Water, signal, and bailout
Water is available: streams along Avalon & A-Z Trails at lower elevations. Cell reception is spotty, Crawford Notch has very limited signal; summit may get none or brief signal. Bailout options include Return to Crawford Depot via Avalon/A-Z, shortest way out and no alternative exits on Willey Range without retracing. Nearby live water context is available from Ammonoosuc River at Bretton Woods and Zealand River.
Trailhead and access
The most common trailhead is Crawford Notch / Highland Center (Amc), with room for about 50 vehicles. Park at Crawford Depot or nearby Amc Highland Center - hiker parking area.; often plenty of space. Other linked starts include Ethan Pond / Willey Range Trailhead and Avalon Trail Trailhead (Crawford Notch).
Connected route context
Major linked trails include Avalon Trail, Willey Range Trail, A-Z Trail, and Kedron Flume Trail. Nearby 4,000-footer connections include Mount Tom and Mount Willey.
