South Kinsman Mountain's standard hiking options include Mount Kinsman Trail > Kinsman Ridge Trail - via North Kinsman at 10 miles with 3,950 feet of gain and Fishin’ Jimmy Trail - from Lonesome Lake. to Kinsman Ridge at 12 miles with 3,550 feet of gain. A typical completion time is 7–9 hours - out-and-back including North & South Kinsman.
Terrain and exposure
This is a difficult Kinsman Range hike. Expect steep rocky sections, Fishin’ Jimmy has wooden blocks on steep slabs.; Mount Kinsman Trail more gradual. Scrambling is minor, with a few steep ledges on Fishin’ Jimmy Trail where hands may help; none on Mt Kinsman Trail. Upper-mountain terrain includes northern hardwood forest at base; transitioning to spruce-fir at ridge; small alpine-like clearing at South Kinsman summit with low vegetation and 360°, open rock ledges at summit with great views. Weather and exposure are defining planning concerns here: medium, summit exposed; ridge somewhat sheltered in trees.

The best normal hiking window is summer and fall, roughly Lonesome Lake route wet in spring; winter doable with spikes. Download offline maps and do not rely on cell service; leave a plan with someone.

Water is available: streams near Kinsman Trail base; Lonesome Lake and brook on Fishin’ Jimmy Trail. Cell reception is spotty, some reception near summits or at Lonesome Lake hut, mostly weak elsewhere. Bailout options include Lonesome Lake Hut, via Fishin’ Jimmy. for shelter and descending Mt Kinsman Trail to route 116 as alternate exit if needed. The most common trailhead is Kinsman Notch / Beaver Pond Trailhead, with room for about 15 vehicles.
