Middle Carter Mountain Route & Conditions

Route
Middle Carter Mountain's standard hiking options include 19 Mile Brook Trail > Carter Dome Trail > Carter-Moriah Trail - via South Carter at 12.7 miles with 3,750 feet of gain and Imp Trail > North Carter Trail > Carter-Moriah - loop over Middle & South at 10 miles with 3,500 feet of gain. A typical completion time is 8–10 hours - loop over both South and Middle Carter.
Terrain and exposure
This is a difficult Carter-Moriah Range hike. Expect typical White Mountain ridge: lots of roots and rocks, short steep pitches between cols. There are no major scrambling sections; expect a few steep rocky bits but generally hike-able. Upper-mountain terrain includes primarily boreal spruce-fir forest along ridge; dense forest with mossy sections, no alpine zone and partial, limited outlooks on ridge; short spur to viewpoint near summit views. Weather and exposure are defining planning concerns here: medium, ridge mostly wooded but weather can be harsh with limited shelter at exposed knobs.
Weather window
The best normal hiking window is summer and fall, roughly dry trail, good footing; also popular on winter traverses. Plan water conservatively and do not assume reliable sources late in the hike.
Water, signal, and bailout
Water is limited: water source at 19 Mile Brook for first 1.9 mi; none on ridge crest. Cell reception is spotty, some signals on ridge near Imp Face area; mostly weak/none. Bailout options include Descend via North Carter Trail to Imp Trail, northern exit. or via Carter Dome Trail, south. back to 19 Mile trailhead. Nearby live water context is available from Peabody River, Peabody River, and Androscoggin River.
Trailhead and access
The most common trailhead is Nineteen Mile Brook Trailhead, with room for about 12 vehicles. Parking lot for 19-Mile Brook is medium-sized; Imp Trail has roadside parking. Other linked starts include Imp Campground Trailhead.
Connected route context
Major linked trails include Imp Trail, North Carter Trail, Carter-Moriah Trail, Carter Dome Trail, and Black Angel Trail. Nearby 4,000-footer connections include South Carter Mountain and Carter Dome.
