Mount Garfield's standard hiking options include Garfield Trail - via Garfield Ridge Trail at 10 miles with 3,000 feet of gain and Skookumchuck Trail & Garfield Ridge Trail - alternate approach at 12 miles with 4,250 feet of gain. A typical completion time is 5–7 hours - round-trip.
Terrain and exposure
This is a moderate/difficult Franconia Range hike. Expect moderate grade on old fire road path; final push steeper with switchbacks; rocky summit area. There are no major scrambling sections; expect final few yards to summit foundation are rocky but not a scramble. Upper-mountain terrain includes mixed forest of birch and spruce; higher up transitions to dense spruce-fir; small alpine clearing at summit due to past fire tower site and 360°, open rocky summit foundation with sweeping views. Weather and exposure are defining planning concerns here: medium, summit exposed to wind; otherwise trail is sheltered.
Weather window
The best normal hiking window is summer and fall, roughly mild grades; also popular on clear winter days. Download offline maps and do not rely on cell service; leave a plan with someone.
Water, signal, and bailout
Water is available: brook crossings on Garfield Trail around mid-way. Cell reception is spotty, often none until summit, where a weak signal may be picked up. Bailout options include Descend back via Garfield Trail, fastest exit and Garfield Ridge Trail leads to Amc Galehead Hut, ~1.3 miles away. for shelter if needed. Nearby live water context is available from Gale River and Ammonoosuc River.

The most common trailhead is Lincoln Woods Trailhead, with room for about 12 vehicles. Trailhead has a small parking area; Gale River Loop Rd is closed in winter - adds road walk.
