West Bond Route & Conditions

Route
West Bond's standard hiking options include Zealand Road > Zealand Trail > Twinway > West Bond Spur - Bonds Traverse at 19.8 miles with 3,950 feet of gain and Lincoln Woods > Bondcliff Trail > West Bond Spur - out & back at 22.6 miles with 3,900 feet of gain. A typical completion time is 12+ hours - traverse. or multi-day; ~10–12 hours out-and-back from Lincoln Woods.
Terrain and exposure
This is an extremely difficult Pemigewasset Wilderness hike. Expect long wilderness trails, gradual at start then steep; summit spur is rough and rocky. Scrambling includes no major scrambles - just short steep sections on spur trail, class 2. Upper-mountain terrain includes mixed hardwood and pine at low elevations; transitioning to spruce-fir; patches of alpine scrub on ridges and open ledges and 360°, small open summit with exceptional views. Weather and exposure are defining planning concerns here: high, very remote, summit and ridge exposed to weather with no nearby shelters.
Weather window
The best normal hiking window is summer and early fall, roughly long day hike or overnight; avoid spring mud. Check a summit forecast and carry windproof/warm layers; turn back if visibility or lightning risk increases.
Water, signal, and bailout
Water is limited: water at Zealand Hut and streams on lower Bondcliff Trail; none on ridge itself. Cell reception is none, extremely remote; do not expect any signal in the Pemi wilderness. Bailout options include No quick bailouts, nearest exit via Zealand Trail, to north. or backtrack to Lincoln Woods, south.. Possibility to shelter at Zealand Hut if heading north.
Trailhead and access
The most common trailhead is Lincoln Woods Trailhead, with room for about 150 vehicles. Lincoln Woods has large parking - fee.; Zealand Road trailhead medium - road closed in winter. Other linked starts include Zealand Road Trailhead and Wilderness Trail Trailhead (Pemi). Seasonal access-road context includes Zealand Rd.
Connected route context
Major linked trails include Bondcliff Trail, West Bond Spur, and Twinway Trail. Nearby 4,000-footer connections include Mount Bond, Bondcliff, and Zealand Mountain.
