Mount Bond Route & Conditions
Route
Mount Bond's standard hiking options include Lincoln Woods → Wilderness Trail → Bondcliff Trail → West Bond Spur - Bonds Traverse at 22.6 miles with 4,800 feet of gain and Zealand Trail → Twinway → Bondcliff Trail - via Zealand Hut & Guyot at 19.8 miles with 3,950 feet of gain. A typical completion time is 10–12 hours or multi‑day.
Terrain and exposure
This is an extremely difficult Pemigewasset Wilderness hike. Expect long, remote approach on old railroad grade followed by gradual climb; rocky alpine ridge with open ledges and talus. Scrambling is minor, with rocky steps but no technical scrambles. Upper-mountain terrain includes deciduous and birch forest along the approach, transitioning to spruce–fir forest, krummholz and alpine tundra on the ridge and 360° open summit with dramatic views of the Pemigewasset Wilderness and neighboring Bonds. Weather and exposure are defining planning concerns here: high, fully exposed ridge.
Weather window
The best normal hiking window is summer and early fall, roughly long day; winter only for experienced hikers. Check a summit forecast and carry windproof/warm layers; turn back if visibility or lightning risk increases.
Water, signal, and bailout
Water is limited: the last reliable water is a stream on Bondcliff Trail about 3 miles in; none on the ridge. Cell reception is spotty/None, Amc notes less than half of the Pemigewasset Wilderness has cell service. Bailout options include Retreat to Lincoln Woods or Zealand trailheads and Guyot campsite provides shelter but remains far from roads.
Trailhead and access
The most common trailhead is Lincoln Woods Trailhead, with room for about 150 vehicles. Large fee lot at Lincoln Woods; medium lot at Zealand trailhead - road closed in winter. Other linked starts include Zealand Road Trailhead, Zealand Falls Hut Access (Zealand Rd), and Wilderness Trail Trailhead (Pemi). Seasonal access-road context includes Zealand Rd.
Connected route context
Major linked trails include Bondcliff Trail and Twinway Trail. Nearby 4,000-footer connections include West Bond, Bondcliff, and Zealand Mountain.
