A tall conifer with soft needles in bundles of five and elongated cones. Often forms mixed stands and is prominent in lower-elevation WMNF edges and valleys.

    Provides mast (seeds) and structural habitat; large pines offer nesting sites and windbreak effects; early successional stands can develop after disturbance.
